CLIMATE AFFECTS FIREWOOD PRICES IN RS

The rainy season has reduced the firewood stock in Rio Grande do Sul. According to information from the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater/RS), despite the abundance of raw material, climatic conditions and a shortage of labor have slowed the removal of wood from the fields, which has increased the demand for dry wood, especially in the form of firewood. The price of eucalyptus firewood, which cost R$ 80.00 per stere (cubic meter) in May, reached R$ 120.00/stere by the end of July.

Since the economic return from eucalyptus is higher than that from black acacia, producers have been opting for eucalyptus planting in recent years. Due to logistical difficulties and product scarcity, the price of black acacia firewood is much higher than that of eucalyptus, reaching up to R$ 190.00/stere in the market.
